1-2-3 Done! Your First Vegetable Garden
I know many people would love to create a vegetable garden, but are overwhelmed with the thought of starting it. Now, I'm not going to mislead you into thinking that this is an effortless task, but if you get a few elements right from the beginning and you don't bite off more than you can chew, so to speak, the rewards are well worth the effort.
The easiest way to get started is by building a framed, raised bed. This is a good way of creating a blank slate for planting. Choose an area that gets plenty of sun throughout the day. Next, use good quality soil. If you don't get the soil right, gardening will be a constant struggle with poor results. Most vegetable plants are rapid growers and heavy feeders so they need rich soil.
After the soil, comes plant selection. When it comes to vegetables it is important to know the average first and last frost dates in your area. This will determine your growing season. Planting schedules for most vegetables can be developed based on these dates.
It is extremely helpful to look at the plant tag to see what requirements the vegetable has before you buy it. Some require more sun than others. Some other helpful information written on the tag is how deep to plant as well as the proper spacing.
Once you have planted your garden, make sure you water the vegetables on a regular basis. On average, vegetable plants need about 1/2 inch to 1 inch of water per week. Moisture should be distributed evenly throughout the bed because over watering can be just as harmful as under watering.
Starting your first vegetable garden boils down to a few simple ideas – get to know your site, plant in good soil, be consistent about watering and learn as much as you can about the plants you want to grow.
