Marge Says, "Yum! Coconut oil."

See Marge in Action

My cat Marge was “thumbing” through a health book and discovered her new favorite treat – organic, virgin coconut oil.  This isn’t the villainous hydrogenated coconut oil that contains trans-fats. Organic, virgin coconut oil has been the darling of health conscious people for several years and now Marge has discovered it.  Not only is it good for people, but pets too.  She’s so excited she wanted to share the news with her friends.

Why is it that humans keep all the good stuff to themselves?  When is the last time your person shared a fish sandwich or allowed you to use the couch as a scratching post?  Allen tells me these things aren’t good for me, but I’m suspicious that he’s just greedy.  Well, I discovered a tasty treat that he can’t hog, because it is good for both of us – organic, virgin coconut oil.

Before you begin your campaign to have coconut oil added to your menu there are a few things you should know.

  1. Do the research. Before adding anything new to your diet educate yourself on the pluses and minus. It’s a good idea to have your person check with your vet too, especially if you have special conditions or take medications. I was able to find good info from Whole Dog Journal, and an article called ‘Crazy About Coconut Oil’ by CJ Puotinen author of The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care.
  2. Be sure your person buys organic VIRGIN (unrefined) coconut oil. It should say this right on the label. Some coconut oils have been refined, bleached and deodorized. This process can remove all the good stuff and leave behind chemicals. There are several companies that produce organic virgin coconut oil. Allen bought a jar for about $10 at a local health food store.
  3. There is a long list of potential benefits to adding coconut oil to our diets. I like it because it makes my hair silky. My best attribute some might say. The medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil are antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral. Coconut oil is purported to help with arthritis, digestion and put a little pep in your step. Although we cats never have this problem, dogs will be happy to know that it is said to improve those oily, stinky coats that often prevent the belly scratching you deserve. It can be used topically to treat minor scrapes and dry itchy skin. Allen puts it on his cuticles after he’s been digging in the dirt.
  4. Coconut oil tastes great. I like to lick it right off the spoon or it can be melted and poured over dried food.
  5. The recommended dosage is 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight. I weigh 15 pounds and take 1.5 teaspoons per day.
  6. It is important to build up to the maximum dosage. If you are an 80 pound dog, don’t eat 8 teaspoons right off the bat. That can lead to fatigue, headaches and some unpleasant trips to the bathroom. Allen started out giving me just a little taste. I thought he was being stingy, but he increased the amount every few days. Now I eat a teaspoon in the morning and another half teaspoon late in the day.

Marge! how wonderful that you and Allen have discovered coconut oil. My husband recently found a 5 lb. container online and we used it exclusively to make his favorite treat- popcorn. Tastes fantastic and smells good too. However, our daughter who was visiting is sensitive to the oil in the air when it was heated - it gave her headaches. You are so right about the organic virgin coconut oil. My coworkers at the hospital immediately thought of all the warnings about coconut oil that come from the hydrogenated stuff. Enjoy! Dee

Hey Marge you reminded me of my friend who left us a year ago, he was old and maybe would have stayed around longer if he had known about Coconut oil, I will explain to my Mum she needs to buy some......... I am tabby, (Fluffy is typing) jand look ust like you, but Samson is an orange male cat that I don't especially care about, but I do like him at meal time as he tends to be picky so I stare him down then get two helpings instead of one.

Hey Marge, thanks for the heads up on the coconut oil. I told my momma about it and she spoke to her friend Rodney, Spot the dog's daddy and he told her to talk to Jean who works there. Momma liked what Jean told her the oil can do for us. She got a bottle of coconut oil diet tablets for herself, and now she is going to get a bottle of the oil for my little brother and me. Momma loves coconut meat and milk right out of the shell, but the coconuts here in Nashville, TN are very small so she is going to try the oil so she stop buying them. Jean, who works at the health food store told momma about the tablets. Now momma, my little brother BuddyBudkins and I will be a lot healthier thanks to you. Again, thanks for the heads up about coconut oil.

While unrelated to coconut oil, this reminded me of something pet owners should be aware of since Spring is near. Marge, your human might remind people of the deadly effects of cocoa mulch to pets. Keep up your great postings...love reading them!!

Coconut-the healthy oil

by Patti on January 18, 2009 02:26
An anonymous comment said that coconut oil is bad for people. Actually coconut oil is a very stable, with medium-chain fats, and no cholesterol. Not all fats are bad for us. Virgin olive oil and cold-water fish oil (like cod liver oil) have been more widely studied, but you can find information on various medical nternet sites that give the green light to using coconut oil. Just remember it has the same amount of calories as butter or olive oil.

I love coconut oil, I have not as yet used it as a treat for my pets, but as a mother of a newborn with sensitive skin we have a rule, we dont put it on our baby unless you can eat it! We started with EVOO, it worked well but didnt absorb as well as we liked. WE got coconut oil at our local healthfood store and have been putting it on baby ever since! We love how soft it makes his skin and the pleasent smell as well. OUr child has a beautiful complexion and enjoys his after bath massage. The oil absorbs right into his skin and doesnt leave him greasy like baby oil.

Dear Marge, Momma has two friends that are co-partners and owners of a human health food store. They have helped my mamma with some medicine that she use to get at a pharmacy and help her learn about her anemia (whatever that is). They have the medicine for that also, but she takes a large dosage, and they don't have that dosage. Too much of what they have will make her sick so they won't let her buy it. She knows one of them for over 10 years and trusts them both. I asked her to talk to Spotty the Dog's daddy and ask if he has the oil and if not, would he get it for me? I will to pay for it knowing it is good for both of us. My little brother, Buddy Budkins, asked me to tell you "hello". He was an abused kittykat that adopted momma. He came from my doctor's office after someone dropped him off. He still has some fear in him, but momma is making it go away with all the love she gave me as I am a dumpster rescued 16-yr old man. Me and my past kittykat adopted brothers and sister and my 13-1/2 yr old adopted brother, all of who is no longer with momma, were all adopted. Only the pupper and first kittykat were not rescused. They came from, as momma tells it, wonderful and loving family. Well, I have to go sit on the window. All the birds are flying in large groups in front of our apartment window. I can't wait for spring to come back so I can see my friend "Bully" the Squirrel and lots of what momma calls "KimmKat birds". They are Cardinals and I'll tell you about that at another time. Love your column. Love, Rudolph the Black Nose KittyKat (Rudy)and Buddy Budkins

Wow, I like it myself for many of the reasons noted. I'm going to have to share it with my kitty, Meiko.

I don't know about cat diets, but I do know that people would be wise to steer clear of this oil. Coconut oil is 90% saturated fat. Hydrogenization and other processes increases the percentage. The meat of the coconut is much healthier for you. Check out Coconut Oil in wikipedia.

Hi Marge. Thanks for the heads up on the organic virgin coconut oil. We'll tell our person to grab some next time she's at Whole Foods. We are both dogs, one older (14) and one younger (3). Since Morgan is older, his coat is getting less shiny than it was. We eat very healthy but these things can happen with old age. Our person and Morgan could use a little more pep. Jingles, being a young Rat Terrier/Yorkie mix, certainly doesn't need more energy. But when it comes to good health you can never get too much. Merry Christmas!!
