A Pattern Language
A Pattern Language
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words; well sometimes a word is worth a thousand pictures. A Pattern Language is the companion to Christopher Alexander's earlier work, The Timeless Way of Building. These books set out to teach people how to design their own houses, gardens, office buildings and even communities around principles that honor both our need for privacy and positive interaction. I found the ideas quite compelling as I was formulating my 12 principles of design for the Garden Home. The authors present "patterns," or design solutions, which allow everyday folk like you and me to convey our ideas in a language that anyone can understand. Whether you are in the process of building or not, this book will completely change how you look at your environment. If this book proves to overwhelming at over 1,000 pages pick up a copy of Patterns of Home; The Ten Essentials of Enduring Design. It is an updated version released 2002 by Tauton Press that melts down the patterns to ten essentials.
