With not even a flower bud in sight, this might seem like an unusual time to discuss rose care but it’s never too early to start rolling out the red carpet for this Queen of the Garden.  In this slide show you'll see photos I’ve taken of common rose problems and share preventative measures and control tips that will ensure a summer filled with gorgeous blooms and glossy foliage.

Knock Out Roses

by Sue Ann Setzer on March 7, 2010 12:34
Last year I bought all knock out roses. They were beautiful but now that spring is coming I am confused as to what to do about pruning. I took care of them until winder but I mulched them and kept a check on the. Now I have some green but mostly all red limbs coming out. Do I keep all the red limbs or what do I prune. They are spreading out fast. I live in Lincolnton, NC Zone 7.

feeding roses

I have tried and proven recipe for feeding my roses. 10-10-10 fert+tri-sodium phosphate+epsom salts/ no more mildew, prolific blooms, and little or no black spot. Lady bugs take care of the aphids. Watering is done with soaker hose.

You mentioned lime & sulphur for treatment of black spot on roses. Is there a product that I can use that contains these materials?

Knockout Roses

by Gwen on March 7, 2009 08:09
How much pruning can you do to a Knockout rose? The deer have stripped the leaves off, leaving leggy stems. Can I prune back to the base for next spring's leaves or will that kill the plant? Thanks.

Re: 03-27-09 Spring Rose Care

Thank you so much for this information. I've been wanting to take care of these problems but w/an environment friendly product. Some that I have tried haven't seemed to work, although . . . maybe because of rain, I have not been as faithful to use regularly and that was the cause. Still, so far your suggestions have been the most successful, so I will renew my efforts and use the Fungicide. Thanks, Allen.

climbing roses

I can't remember the name of my red climbing roses, but I've had them for at least a couple of decades. My "trick" to rid them of bad company is to spray immediatley with dish detergent mixed up in water. Does the job every time! When I didn't know much about climbers way back then, I cut mine way back and it took about three years to get them growing and climbing again. Now, I just leave them tied to a large fence and they amaze me by coming back nice and healthy every spring! A joy to behold!

First I love reading your newsletter. I have no luck with roses. I do keep trying. I have black spot and mildow. I will try your suggestions. But, I never know when to cut them back. I did not cut them this year and spring is coming, do I cut them back when spring arrives?

I've also had good luck with a pre-emergent spray of lime-sulphur. That seems to postpone or elminate the fungus' presence during the growing year.

Roses

by June E. Pennock on February 28, 2009 02:05
I was impressed with the information and the product to use. I have two different rose bushs, one a minature(1indoor and 1 outdoor) and a giant which keeps getting taller & taller. We cut them back in the fall. They start off good then seem to get the black leaf so hopefully I'll be able to safely fix the problem now. Thanks

older treatments for aphids and blackrot

by Victoria on February 28, 2009 08:18
Do you happen to know what older treatments existed, and still exist, for aphids and blackrot and the other problems roses are heir to? I am trying to keep several types of heirloom roses blooming in Southern California and would prefer to avoid all modern chemicals, if possible. Thank you in advance for your attention to my question. Also: my email address has changed. It used to be vreiter@worldnet.att.net It is now vkreiter@verizon.net

Rose Problems

by Carol Mcmillion on February 27, 2009 03:41
Your slide show went too fast for me to adequately read the entire information on each problem. Therefore, the slide show was of no use to me. It went too fast to even read what you said about fertilizeing. So can't you do better than this for all of us?

Japanese Beetles
