P. ALLEN SMITH'S GARDEN HOME NAMED TO FINE GARDENING MAGAZINE'S "BEST OF THE YEAR" BOOK LIST
(Little Rock, AR. December 16, 2003) P. ALLEN SMITH'S GARDEN HOME: CREATING GARDENS FOR EVERYDAY LIVING (Clarkson Potter, 2003) has been named in the February 2004 issue of Fine Gardening magazine as one of the year's best gardening books.
Selected and reviewed by the magazine's contributing editor C. Colston Burrell, he writes "TV personality P. Allen Smith's first book offers practical and achievable ideas for those learning to personalize their gardens. Whether your home turf is expansive or intimate, formal or naturalistic, you will benefit from this philosophical book. From the framework to the finishing touches, Smith instructs and inspires the reader."
Filled with gorgeous, color-bursting photography throughout, this is a garden book that goes way beyond the planting and pruning commonly associated with this pastime. Allen defines the garden home as the private sanctuary between the home's interior spaces and the great outdoors offering twelve principles of design as guides to create intimate and inviting garden rooms. P. ALLEN SMITH'S GARDEN HOME brings beauty of nature up close, reminding us why we wanted a garden in the first place.
Upon learning of the book's selection, Smith responded by saying, "I am honored to have my book endorsed by one of the country's leading gardening magazines. It is gratifying to know that the ideas I have offered have been so well received."
This year, Smith's book was also recognized for its excellence when he was one of 80 authors invited to participate in the National Book Festival hosted by the Library of Congress and First Lady Laura Bush on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
In February, he received the Horticultural Communication Award from the American Horticultural Society (AHS) in recognition of his effectiveness in increasing the public's awareness of gardening. And in January, Smith received The Garden Communicators Award from the American Nursery and Landscape Association (ANLA) for his ongoing and outstanding contributions to the public's understanding and appreciation of gardening on a national level.
