Framing the View Slide Show

In gardens, many elements must come together to create beautiful 'pictures.' Perhaps no principle of garden design fits this art analogy better than that of framing the view. Just as an artist identifies the subject and frames it within the painting, so the garden designer must select and enhance views in a garden by careful framing.

Here are a few photos that illustrate the idea of framing views in the garden.

New Dawn Rose

by Pam Jones on February 28, 2010 04:37
We have an arch/arbor over the gate to our fence. We planted New Dawn on one side and Jackson&Perkins Dream Weaver (pink) and Stairway to Heaven (red) on the other side. The last two were gifts from our daughter and do not get very large, only about j3.5 feet tall. New Dawn has lots of canes, but few flowers and does not re- bloom. What am I doing wrong? I fertilize twice each summer with the 6-8 week fertilizer for roses. We do have a lot of Black Spot. Any suggestions would be most appreciated Pam

Thanks for reminding me, I'm in the process of landscaping a downslope area by my bbq/patio area. I have looked at it from all views to make sure it is balanced and fits the area. Also, that the view of our creek is not blocked.

The problem with your example is that most of us don't have as nice a view or no view. Could you possibly show us another kind of framing?
