Why not make this year’s vacation a garden getaway?  In this episode of P. Allen Smith Gardens we’ll look at destinations that you might want to put on your wishlist. Each one has a unique appeal to gardeners.
We’ll also cover tips on caring for your garden while you are away and sample a delicious Italian recipe for broccoli rabe pasta from our friends at the Viking Cooking School.

People and Places:
Bill Alexander, Landscape Curator, Biltmore Estate, Asheville, NC  - Bill talks about how Frederick Law Olmsted (April 25, 1822 – August 28, 1903), the Father of American Landscape Architecture, transformed the gardens at Biltmore.  Olmsted took barren farmland and created one of the country’s more impressive landscaped grounds. 

LuAnn Craighton, Conservation Studies, Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, GA
- Callaway Gardens is the home of the Day Butterfly Center.  LuAnn Craighton describes the experience visitors will have at the center and how it’s “ok for the butterflies to reach out and touch” the visitors.  

Lord Ashbrook, Arley Hall, Cheshire, England
- Lady Elizabeth Ashbrook was an inspiration to her children who choose to carry on the family’s gardening legacy.  Lord Ashbrook tells how he became interested in developing The Grove on the Arley estate. 

Denise Delaney, Horticulturist, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Austin, TX -  Denise discusses how the LBJWC developed under the concept of Total Resource Conservation where they followed Mrs. Johnson’s motto of “sitting gently on the land.”  

Colin Miller, Chef, Viking Cooking School, Memphis, TN - Colin creates a simple and healthy dish called Broccoli Rabe.
