01-25-10 Greenhouse Show

Broadcasting the week of 01-25-10
It's winter and you may be wondering what you can do in the garden, well in this episode of P. Allen Smith Gardens you'll see that gardening doesn't stop when the temperatures get cold. Visit a professional grower to find out how improvements in greenhouse technology produce better plants and take a look at a home greenhouse that's perfect for year round gardening.  Plus receive a recipe for a spicy salad dressing and learn how to grow salad greens.

Feature Highlights:

People and Places:

  • Henry Huntington, Nursery Owner, Pleasant View Gardens, Loudon, NH -  Henry takes us on a tour of his new, state of the art greenhouse.  The advantage to this industrial system is that the roof panes can be opened up to simulate the outdoors.  This helps harden the plants off before early spring shipping.  Being able to use nature to supplement man made energy is a good “green” component of this system.  Henry reminds us that the height of greenhouses in general came down in the 1960’s-1970’s due to increased energy costs.  An unfortunate by-product of this was poor plant health.  These days greenhouses have returned to a taller ceiling height because the height helps growers to control the indoor quality, which improves the plant stock.
  • Andrew Cook, European Garden - Andrew and Allen take a look at the twin wall polycarbonate greenhouse installed in Allen’s city garden.  At the Garden Home Retreat we see time-lapse photography that shows us how quickly and easily it is to install one of these structures.
  • The Biltmore, Asheville, NC - The Biltmore is the largest privately owned home in the United States.  The grounds contain an impressive conservatory or glasshouse built for George W. Vanderbilt.
  • Mark Edds, DuPont Tyvek Specialist - Mark Edds visits the Garden Home Reteat and inspects the installation of the Tyvek flashings around the windows and doors.  Flashings keep water out and help seal windows and doors thus conserving energy and resources.
  • Lynn Miller, Pittsburg, PA - Lynn was one of the thousands of International Master Gardeners in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 2007 for the IMG Conference.  She tells us about gardening in Pittsburg and how the microclimate created by her proximity to the city helps her to grow plants that otherwise would not do well in her zone.
  • Jerri Myers, Chef, Viking Cooking School, Memphis, TN-  Chef Jerri (pronounced Jerra) Myers gives tips for making a gourmet salad even better.
    • Chill your plates to keep your salad crisper longer.
    • Wash lettuce and roll it in a damp paper towel and store in the refrigerator until you are ready to prepare the greens.  Wrap a damp dish towel into a ring that you can nestle your mixing bowl into to make whisking and pouring easier.
    • Pour dressing around the outer edge of the serving bowl and toss greens from outside to in.
