Installing a Water Feature at the GHR

An important feature of a well designed garden is a focal point.  Be it a statue, bench, colorful shrub or gazebo; elements with strong visual interest are an exclamation mark among the flowers and foliage.  A focal point can serve as a spot to focus our attention, a sign post to guide us, or a way to infuse the garden with personality.  One of the primary focal points at the Garden Home Retreat is a water feature that is positioned right in the heart of the terraced gardens.

I often receive questions about how to install a water feature, so I thought it might be of interest to see the steps involved in building the pool and fountain at the Garden Home Retreat.

Mr. Smith, I adore your shows and publications. You're a master! Just now, I want to thank you for showing pictorial how-to's for the circular garden pool. This is precisely what I want built on my property. The photos will help me show my contractor my wishes. Question: since you acid-stained the interior, will it support pond fish and water plants? Thanks, Allison

nice job! You should consider specifying that the coping stones around the pond be created from a curved template - this way you do not have to use such small pieces as I see here... I can send you some great photos of what I am talking about....

Hi Allen: I'm planning to transform a deep, raised bed into a fountain, recycling the water with a solar pump. My question is: do koi fish survive snow and freezing temperatures? And, can I find small size koi fish because my fountain isn't going to be like yours. Where do I find your reply? Thank you, Adela

Thank you for sharing the creation of your water fountain. It is lovely, simple and inspiring. The idea of using acid paing it new to me -- a great idea I will use someday. Thank you again! Your garden ideas are always beautiful and doable.

Question

How do you keep loud croacking frogs away from water features? My friend has a beautiful fountain and the tree frogs sit on the ledge. They are so loud, we cannot even talk. Thank you,
