Marge Says, "I Have Favorite Plants Too!"

Marge helping with the frost blankets.Marge was overwhelmed with the responses to her suggestions for designing a pet friendly garden.  To be honest, she’s
been a little hard to live with since receiving all the positive feed back.  One would think that SHE was the garden
designer.

Now that Marge is “in charge” of the garden she insists on putting her paw prints on all the decisions.  And boy is she hard to please. I get a nasty flick of the tail every time I come home from the garden center because I never seem to bring any of her favorite plants.  Finally I told her to put pen to paper and give me a list of her top choices.  Here’s her report.

Thank goodness Allen is finally taking into consideration my plant choices for the garden.  I spend a great deal of time out there and appreciate the addition of a few of my favorites.  I selected most of these plants because of their aromatic oils.  I find them quite stimulating, which is helpful when patrolling for mice in the garage.  I’ve also included a grass to nibble on.  This is important for my digestion.  I must stay fit after all.

Catnip (Nepeta cataria)– It’s common knowledge that cats like catnip so I am shocked that Allen has yet to plant this in his garden.  He has plenty of catmint and I suppose he is just not aware that there is a difference between the two.  Both are members of the nepeta family, but catnip has larger leaves and white flowers.  There is saying that states, “If you set it, the cats will eat it. If you sow it, the cats don't know it.”  I cannot confirm or deny this since Allen has yet to plant it.  Humph!
Perennial; full sun; moist but well-drained soil; zones 4 – 9; cut back after the blooms fade for a second flowering.

Catmint ‘Six Hills Giant’ (Nepeta mussinii) – I’m not as fond of catmint as I am of catnip, but the inclusion of cat in the name gets it an automatic placement on my list and the foliage does smell good.  The blue flower spires are lovely as well.   Allen likes to use drifts of catmint along paths.  The form is very frothy so it spills over the edges, softening hard lines of the path very nicely.
Perennial; full sun; moist but well-drained soil; zones 4 – 9; cut back after the blooms fade for a second flowering.

Catmint ‘Walkers Low’ (Nepeta mussinii) – For the longest time Allen would only plant ‘Six Hills Giant’, but last year he discovered ‘Walkers Low’ catmint.  Although the name implies that it is short in stature, this variety is actually named after its place of origin, not the plant’s mature height.  It will grow to about 24 inches tall and produces masses of deep blue flowers.
Perennial; full sun; moist but well-drained soil; zones 4 – 9; cut back after the blooms fade for a second flowering.

Heliotrope (Valerian officinalis) – Valerian is one of my all time favorites.  The dark green leaves and light pink flower clusters borne on 5 foot tall flower stalks are a fine addition to the back of the flower border.  I’ll admit parts of the plant do smell like old cheese, but that’s plus in my book.  Although it is typically used as a sedative in the people world, cats find it to be very invigorating.
Perennial; dappled shade or full sun with afternoon shade; moist, humus rich, well-drained soil; zones 5 - 9.

Cat Thyme (Teucrium marum) – This herb is a cousin of germander; it’s not related to thyme.  Allen likes to use Teucrium chamaedrys as a low, evergreen hedge in herb gardens. Like many of the other plants on my list, cat thyme has aromatic foliage that I find very pleasing.  Cat thyme also has pretty pink flowers that appear in summer.
Perennial; full sun; well-drained, rocky, neutral to alkaline soil; zones 5 – 9.

Cat Grass (Monida Oats) – A girl cannot live on kibbles alone.  She needs some roughage, too.  That’s why I would like Allen to start growing cat grass or Monida oats.  The seeds sprout quickly, producing dense blue green foliage.  It’s a sweet tasting treat that helps with my digestion and prevents hair balls.  Another nice characteristic is that it can be grown indoors so Allen can keep a pot inside for me, too.  If this sounds like something your cats would like, be sure to purchase seeds that are organic and labeled specifically for pets.  Check your favorite garden center for Ferry-Morse cat grass seeds or Allen’s friend Renee Shepherd also sells gourmet salad greens for cats.  Visit her website http://www.reneesgardenseeds.com.
Annual; full sun to partial shade.

Marge - Your Columns

by E Beron on April 11, 2009 08:21
Dear Marge, My three garden cats, who moved in with me after Hurricane Katrina caused their owner to move away, love my garden and live on my carport. Formerly feral, they liked my menu and are now my cats-- love being rubbed and scratched, cry at my back door at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. to be fed. All of us love your articles.....not often enough, though. XXX

Cat Grass

by Suzanne on June 18, 2008 10:07
I've tried the cat grass that you can buy at the pet store indoors, but it dies so quickly. And one of my cats doesn't seem to care for it. Are there any other plants that they'd like to nibble on (not just love on, as I'm assuming they'll do with the other plants mentioned above)? And is the grass I've been buying different from "Monida Oats"?

5 Cat Household

by Leigh Boen on April 10, 2008 11:26
We're not too sure whom owns whom but we've (5) 1/2 Siamese cats, all clowns who LOVE "Marge's missives"! As an English garden designer I've filled the gardens w/butterfly; hummingbird; birds of all sorts & of course "cat friendly" gardens. I started planting "Lemon Cat Mint" many years ago, leaves very aromatic w/small white flowers, grows like a weed in my Herb/Vegie gardens! All the neighborhood cats "Basque" right in the center of all my plants getting "high"! Marge, keep the columns coming!

Valerian officinalis

by Barb Birkinbine on April 4, 2008 01:20
Hi Allen, Just a note about Marge's selection of Valerian for the cat garden. It's true that the root part of Valerian smells pretty bad, but you (Marge) forgot to mention that the drift of valerian flowers on the wind is intoxicating! It is one of the most fragrant flowers that never fails to garner a "where is that fragrance coming from?" comment from people. Besides, if you don't dig it up for the root sedative, you will never have anything but beautiful smells coming from the plant. Barb- who is now dreaming of the day the valerian comes into bloom.

re. Marge's Garden

by Laurie Decker on April 3, 2008 07:02
I giggled when I started seeing your articles about Marge. You see, last summer, a cat adopted my yard and dog....much to my chagrin, as I've never really been a cat person. I'm more of a bird and dog person. And he looks almost exactly like Marge, except fuzzier, almost 20 pounds, rock solid, with nails of steel. I bought a house only 1 1/2 years ago, so started to put in rasied beds as I live in Alaska. I know plants cats like, which was corroborated by Marge, however my new front raised bed with shade perennials has just recently been dug in, and now he's decided my wintered planter boxes are for digging in. So I'm learning to live with a cat, and am learning about gardening with a cat. Where I go, the dog goes, and hence the cat goes.....if I dig, the dog digs, hence the cat digs. We all have an odd working relationship. :-) Now if I can just get them to both dig in the right places, I'll have my new gardens at my new house ready in no time. :-) I think I'll be making one large raise bed specifically for he and the dog. Good luck with Marge. I'm learning to like cats also. Laurie Anchorage, Alaska

Marge's Favorite Plants

by linda on March 29, 2008 01:10
Here in British Columbia, Canada, in my garden "Summerlight," the 3 indoor/outdoor cats reign supreme. Poopy, Miss and Enemy chewed at my catmint so much, I had to divide it up and spread it all over the garden to make several kitty cat feeding stations! They all love the catmint. I USED to love the flowers! (They chew it all so much, it never comes into bloom anymore!) Isn't it wonderful the way cats and gardens (and gardeners) seem to go together? It is a rare day out in the garden at "Summerlight" that I do not have the company of at least one of my feline "bosses!" Thanks, Allen, for including Marge on your website. More please! :)

Marge's favorites

Does Marge have any doggie friends? If so, perhaps she could find out from them what some of their favorite things would be in the garden! My dogs are inveterate sniffers/nibblers in my garden, but I'm not sure all the things they munch on are good for them. We dog people would appreciate any suggestions Marge might pick up from (small) dogs with whom she feels comfortable exchanging a little gossip over the back fence. Thanks!

for the first time in 45 years (soon to be 46), our house is without a cat. put our "sprite " down last year (cancer). although he was totally deaf, he lived a long, spoiled life (13 yrs). i love reading about other spoiled cats. like marge, sprite loved to walk among the plants/flowers, and nap in the sun.

Marge's plant list good, but...

by Mary Werstler on March 24, 2008 06:34
My cat Sophie Lou enjoyed Marge's plant list, but as an indoor cat, doesn't get out in the garden regularly. She enjoys the cat grass that can be bought in pet stores, and will occasionally nibble on the indoor spider plants.

Morning Glories

by Mitzi on March 24, 2008 01:11

Catnip

by Nanci on March 24, 2008 08:38
I have grown this for my 3 Siamese cats for years and they love it! They very daintily eat the flower buds as they form but never enough so it does not flower - masses of purple/blue spires - it has grown huge and I just moved parts of it to our new home so they have three patches to choose from! Not sure if it is coincidence but since they have been eating this - I don't seem to have a flea problem! A plus!

How could we live without our cats? Marge is so like my Gracie, looks very much the same and seems to be of the same activity or lack thereof. Her sister, Blackie, is so the opposite, running and pouching on everything that moves and some that do not. Now if I could only teach them to weed and eat Japanse beetles life would be better. I love them just the same and really enjoy their company as I work in my garden.

more indoor food suggestions from Marge

Any more suggestions for indoor eats? My babies won't leave my houseplants alone, and are destroying many of them. Mom was killed, so we took in her litter of 3 plus another 1 over the winter. They are housebound now, but a small price to pay for love, warmth, food, shelter, soft beds and medical attention, not to mention bird and squirrel feeders that provide constant entertainment.

Marge looks just like my spoiled cat Prissy. She found me when she was but a tiny ktten. It took from July of 03 til Feb of 04 to tame her enough that I could pick her up. She now is and inside cat most nights and outsided most of the day. Is very "Bossy". She too loves the yard and plants.

Safe indoor & outdoor plants for cats

I loved marge's column. She is a beautiful cat. My cat is an indoor cat but wishes she could be an outdoor cat. Upon getting Jemima I had all kinds of indoor plants, but not knowing what was safe I gave them all away. I can't seem to find a list of safe plants even on the internet. Now the house just doesn't look right are there any indoor plants that are safe from a nibbling part Maine Coon cat? I really enjoy you email that you so much. Jan Wilder

Not risking my favorite pets to dangers, so appreciate your advice on organic seeds and items especially safe for cats as well as tasty. Hurray...it's spring! What about ladybugs that lived over winter in our house, are they safe to eat? They are taunting both cats.
