Mycorrhiza

Did you know there is a fungus in your garden that you actually want to encourage? Unlike black spot or powdery mildew, some fungi are good for our plants, and are hard at work helping your plants take up nutrients from the soil. In return the fungi receive sugars from the plant. This symbiotic relationship is called mycorrhiza.

Plant Growth

Another thing to make plants explode with growth is to mix one can of beer and one bottle of soda water to a gallon of water, then water the plants well. This feeds the good bacteria in the soil.

I didn't expect to read about a beneficial fungus good in the garden, but rather find the "root" cause of my 2 year failure in raising the red Vinca that performed so well in the flower bed 3 yrs. ago. The past 2 years, it goes along well for a time, then just shrivels up and dies like a root fungus or larvae attack. I had even replaced the soil to no avail. I plan on buying a new species, supposedly not prone to a problems, if I can find it in local nurseries. Park seed was selling on variety called Cora Hybrid, but they were sold out of plants, and seeds by Vinca are supposedly very slow to germinate, especially without a greenhouse.

Interesting article! I have noticed the white, cottony stripes in my garden especially right under the mulch layer and have often wondered what it was. Now, I know!! Thanks for the information!

Gardening this year for 1st time in years...

We will enjoy a garden at local Methodist Church. They recently bought a defunct driving range next foor and have plowed it, allowing members to cultivate and raise a 20' by 40' garden. We're like children at 76 years old!
