Orchid Arrangement

More and more people are growing orchids because they are readily available and less expensive than they have been in the past. If you compare the price of the plant with the duration of bloom, you can see that they're actually a very good value.

During the winter I rely heavily on orchids to add color to my home and I have found that by combining them with a few houseplants I can create an elegant arrangement in a short amount of time.

Here's what you'll need to put together a similar arrangement:

  • (3) Purple Orchids in 4" Containers
  • (1) Container of your choice that will accommodate the plant materials. If your container is not waterproof or does not have drainage holes you will want to line it. I like to use aluminum foil.
  • (6) 4" pots of Ivy
  • (3) 4" pots of Prayer Plants
  • (9) Sandwich Bags
  • (9) Rubber bands
  • Sheet Moss

Directions:
Allen Creating Orchid Arrangement To create this arrangement, simply apply the same three-shape rule that I've shared with you for cut flower arrangements and outdoor containers - tall/spiky, round/full and cascading.

Place the orchids, your tall and spiky component, in the center of the container. Because orchids are fussy about their growing medium, it is easiest to keep them in the pots in which they were grown. Now, since these pots will take up the majority of the room in the container, I put the other plants in sandwich bags and arrange them around the orchids. This makes it easier to tuck them into the arrangement. Simply remove each plant, along with the soil, from its pot and drop it into a sandwich bag. Secure the top of the sandwich bag with a rubber band.

Now you are ready to put in the prayer plant, which will add the element of a round/full shape. Also, the purple veining of the prayer plant combines nicely with the color of the orchid blooms. To finish it off slip in the ivies so they cascade gracefully over the edge of the container. Once the plants are in place, fill in the open spaces with sheet moss.

This easy arrangement will last for up to two weeks and the orchids will go on to provide you with blooms for more than a month.

Caring for Orchids:

Light: Bright indirect light.

Watering: Flush with water once a week.

Fertilizer: Every other week, 25 percent of the recommended amount on a liquid fertilizer label.

Temperature: Daytime 75 degrees, night time 65 degrees

Justaddiceorchids

I cannot believe that you promote "Justaddiceorchids". My daughter gave me one pot with two plants which is very heavy and w/o drainage) for Christmas. I have many plants (inside/outside, pond) and several orchids but I was shocked because of the manner in which it is potted and directed how to be cared for. I have written to their web site and not received a proper response. I live in, presently , "snow country" SE/PA and keep my orchids indoors. The phael are flushed monthly with distilled water and the leaves are sprayed as well ; weekly, the plants are feed (mixture given to me by orchid specialist) accordingly and the leaves are sprayed as well with the same mixture. They thrive beautifully! Now, with 3 ice cubes per week these justaddiceorchids are dropping their buds--never had this happen before. Any suggestions? I personally want to repot them into separate clay containers.

I have some absolutely beautiful orchrids. We have a four season room facing the south so it stays relativly warm all year around. Our orchids bloom all year round. I have repotted them once however, the roots are growing out of this bowl also. The bowl is about 10" round. I was wondering about cutting bk the roots. I have had this plant for about 3-4 years now and would feel horrible if I killed it. Any advice? If you had an option to down load, I would send a pic. :-)

Phalaeonopsis Orchid

I have been buying the Phaleonopsis for the past two months and out of the 12 or so only three have survived. They are extremely picky. I am starting to get discouraged. Once the leaves fall off, is there any hope of regrowth?

After they have finished blooming, how do I bring blossoms back again. I have let them go dormant, water them like you said and after a month or so, they curl up and die. Since I love them in my home, even though they're rather expensive. I would like them to repeat blooming. Please advise.

When do orchids need to be transplanted? The roots of mine are growing out over the pot. If I transplant in a pot about 1inch larger than the present pot would that be appropiate? Thanks, Sarah

Phalaeonopsis Orchid.. I have just purchased two orchids..The container they came in is a ceramic with no drainage and to me they seem to have been over watered moss is mushy.. WALMART..they seem to be healthy good color, shiny foliage and lots of flowers... It looks like the container they are currently in is too small I can see some root coming through the moss.. I have a fairly large terra cotta pot that I would like to place both in. Is there anything special I need to do to the roots when I transfer to the new container

Orchid Grower

We have one of the country's best orchid growers here in Kansas City. His business, called "Bird's Botanicals" is inside one of our underground caves that has a constant temperature year around! He has thousands of them, and sells them to garden centers near and far. It would be worth your visit to his web site to learn about him. He recently had a robbery and fire at his home and lost everything, so I know he would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you for your great, newsy, informative newsletter! I'm an avid reader!
