Orchids as Gifts

My mother was a stickler for good manners: napkin in your lap, always write a thank you note and never arrive at a party empty handed. I still have trouble keeping my napkin in my lap and my thank you notes are often tardy, but I always remember to bring a host or hostess gift. If I really want to make a lasting impression, I bring an orchid. Orchids cost about as much as a bottle of wine and the blooms last for a month or more, which is more than can be said about vino!

Here are 5 simple ways to "gift wrap" an orchid.

I received an orchid on Valentines and now the two leaves on the bottom turned yellow and fell off and the blooms are already falling off. I have been giving it 3 ice cubes every week and I have fertilized it once. What am I doing wrong?

I have an orchid that I bought last fall, it just keeps adding blooms and is getting a very long stem. This is the first one I have ever owned so I really don't know what I am doing. When it finally quits blooming can I cut it back to make the stem shorter?

I love, and have 3 orchid plants. Have a little success w/them reblooming. My question is this; one of my plants is in the process of producing buds. I noticed the other day the bud is starting to turn black and the stem it's on tan/brown. What can be wrong and how can i rectify this and inhance blooming.

A new fan of orchids

I had never given much thought to growing orchids, but after recently thumbing through decorating magazines, I became aware of the beauty orchids could provide in my home. My husband gave me my first orchid this past Valentine's day, and I was hooked. To date, I have three orchids and my collection is growing. I am a subscriber to the P. Allen Smith website which offers me a wealth of information on many gardening ideas as well as the care and growing of orchids. I have also given an orchid as a gift. Thank you, Allen, for providing such valuable information on so many gardening topics.

One is now budding out on a stem that had bloomed prior. I had heard if patient perhaps it will bloom. sure enough..I am so proud. I have been adding the 3 ice cubes to my african violets and get beautiufl nose-gay effect of blooms.
