P. Allen Smith's Biography

About P. Allen Smith: P. Allen Smith is an award-winning food, lifestyle and garden expert and host of two public television programs, P. Allen Smith 's Garden Home and P. Allen Smith’s Garden to Table, and the syndicated 30-minute show P. Allen Smith Gardens. Smith is one of America 's most recognized and respected garden design experts, providing ideas and inspiration through multiple media venues. He is the author of the best-selling Garden Home series of books published by Clarkson Potter/Random House, including Bringing the Garden Indoors: Container, Crafts and Bouquets for Every Room, published in 2009. His latest book, P. Allen Smith 's Seasonal Recipes from the Garden, was released in December 2010, and was inspired by the abundance of food from his farm and a family of great cooks. Smith is also a regular contributor on NBC 's The TODAY Show. Inspired by a childhood spent on the farm raising and showing livestock and poultry and since then a life of promoting good stewardship of the earth, in 2009 Smith founded the Heritage Poultry Conservancy, an organization dedicated to the preservation and support of all threatened breeds of domestic poultry.

P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home: Located in Little Rock’s historic Quapaw Quarter, the Garden Home is a 1904 Colonial Revival cottage surrounded by a series of garden rooms designed by Smith. This garden was created to illustrate his 12 principles of design, the basis of his first book in the Garden Home series.

P. Allen Smith's Garden Home Retreat: Overlooking the Arkansas River Valley, the Garden Home Retreat encompasses more than 500 acres of a farm dating back to 1840. The centerpiece is the cottage, built in the Greek Revival style and constructed in an earth-friendly manner. Directly behind the cottage is the croquet lawn, which is framed by a summer kitchen and art studio. The surrounding garden includes a fountain garden that separates two wings of garden rooms filled with a mix of annuals, herbs, perennials, roses, shrubs and ornamental grasses. Beyond the flower gardens are orchards filled with heritage apple trees, stone fruit and Blueberries , acre vegetable gardens, a bluebird trail, wildflower fields and daffodil hill, which overflows with more than 225,000 daffodils each spring. Various outbuildings, from barns to mobile chicken homes, are located throughout the grounds and surrounding pastures.

move to Monday weekly news letter

by sandykonya on October 5, 2010 02:25
I\'m don\'t care when you send the most informative letter I have ever read because I work odd hours & on weekends. But to those who have \"normal\" working hours, I think that it\'s great. Just don\'t skip on all that helpful information & ideas.

Gardening in General

by Annie on April 13, 2010 04:36
I just want to say that I buy all of your books and enjoy your shows. You seem so down to earth and like to keep things simple. Maybe it's because you live in the midwest! I live in the Southwest Missouri Ozarks and love to garden. I grew up gardening with my grandmother, and then my father and the love of it has always stayed with me. I don't live in an area where I can have vegetable gardens, but I have flower gardens surrounding my house and they are my "therapy" at the end of a long day. Thanks for all your advice and the great books you publish. When's your next one? Keep up the good work.

House and Gardens of Original Programs

by Regina Phillips on March 27, 2010 06:13
Even though I really like the new location for your Garden Home program, I loved the original house and gardens used in the first shows I watched. Where were they located? How many years did it take to establish the landscaping. I remember that you used many roses. Everything had a very English feel.

I am an avid viewer of your program. You have given me MANY good tips that have helped enhance my yard. I live in Ozark so the info you give about times to plant and things that grow well in this area are especially helpful to me. I've especially enjoyed, also, watching the home and gardens you are building progress. I've been wondering if the public is allowed to see your gardens and landscape. I used to want to go to visit Callaway Gardens (Victory Gardens).....but now I want to see your gardens more. We discussed visiting your place in our sorority (Beta Sigma Phi) the other evening, but didn't know if that sort of thing was possible or not. You are doing a wonderful job inspiring us.... here in AR as well as across the country, I'm sure. Keep up the good work!

by Judy Janowski on February 13, 2010 06:53
My first gardening book is on the market. "Life is a Garden Party" is a gardening observation followed by a spiritual application in rhyme. It is somewhat instructional, whimsical, personal, inspirational... I would like to send a copy with the possibility of an endorsement. Could I have an address to send a copy? Thank you for your consideration.

The Bio for P. Allen Smith

by Susan Schreurs on February 6, 2010 07:43
I am sure we would all like to know more about our favorite gardener's family life. Is P. Allen Smith married with children? Is he single, living with a Partner, is he a Parent? Thank You! Susan

Married? I am starting my own flower farm...any advice?

by GLibertyCenter
I would like to know your trial and errors for tomatoes. Keeping them upright and strong, staking them. After lots of trial and errors I am going to trying fence this upcoming year. I dont like cages...and I have used plastic clothes line thru fence stakes which did better than cages..but still not the trick. I am going to try fence with large holes to keep them upright. I think it will be stronger. And I do alot with Botany and cuttings. Any advice?

TLC

by rusty on January 13, 2010 10:01
Is there any truth to this TLC of plants.... (tender love & care)??? i ask , cuz, I (try) to grow Violets in my kitchen window area and they were blossoming just beautifully for about 2 or three years.... then my hubbie became seriously ill..... (not that he tends them)... and now they haven't bloomed in over a year.... I've changed the soil.... fertilized.... and get nice green leaves but no blossoms...... sure would like to know your answer.... thanks , Rusty

Re: Biography

by on January 12, 2010 11:47
N.A. Dotson, I live in Arkansas in the Ozark Mountains. I can tell you that your Palm trees, unless in pots, cannot be outside. The cold will kill them. However, if they can be left in pots, you can take them out in the summer time. If you have bulbed plants (like your lillies--depending on which types) they should come back each year if you wanted to place them in the ground. Just follow the instructions for insulating the ground for warmth in the winter. I would also do as P. Allen said and contact the University of Arkansas for more info on the plant types. If you have alot of tropical type plants, you will either want to leave them behind, have a place where you can create a green house or enjoy them in the house all winter long.

Moving from one state to another

by N.A. Dotson on December 23, 2009 02:24
We will be moving to Ark. from Calif. in just over a year. We have several plants that are in pots, but I am not certain where to look for help on which will accept the climate in Ark. and which won't. We have palms, various ferns, cylomen, lillies, and many others. Is there a book that would help m out with this dilema? Any help is appreciated, but if I have to leave some behind, I will leave them in the very capable hands of my dad. Thank you

HELP!

by Lesa McCoy on October 18, 2009 10:23
I would like to create an inviting entry that remains true to the Williamsburg tradition. I get many conflicting opinions on Williamsburg gardens. One argument that I trust you would settle is that the colonials did not display any plants that put off color in the front of their homes. Lesa McCoy - Raleigh, NC
