PAS Garden Home: Beauty and Wisdom

There is a saying that goes, “Remember the beauty of the garden for there is peace.”  In this episode of P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home we are going to talk about the wisdom in the garden.  Rain gardens, Japanese maples and pruning tips are just a few of the topics covered.

Back when I was a student in England, one of my professors told me, “You don't need to underestimate the power of a single focal point in the garden and you can achieve that through interesting ornamental trees.” Well, at that point, I had never seen a Purple Smoke tree, which an excellent tree for using as a statement. The genus is Cotinus and I just love it. The reason it's called a Smoke tree is the ethereal bloom. The variety ‘Royal Purple’ has incredible foliage that stays a purplish-red throughout the summer and then in the fall it transforms to reds and yellows and really bright scarlet. It's a fantastic tree, one of my favorites.

Japanese Maple Tree disease

by Carol Olson on July 25, 2009 08:56
My Japanese Maple tree leaves are curling up and drying out, resulting in shriveled leaves and a die-back on the affected branches. One is in sun all day and one is in afternoon shade. These are large and relatively old. (I have lived here about 9 years and they were here when we bought the house.) Can I save them? Two small ones died out last year from the same symptoms and I'm afraid I will lose these two also. Thanks C.O.
