Garden Home Inside and Out
Wire ChandelierUsing Indoor Features in the Garden
An old chandelier with candle holders becomes a focal point for dining al fresco.  Hang the chandelier from a tree branch or trellis or porch ceiling.  Outfit with glass globes filled with seasonal flowers or tea light candles.

Garden Home How To
Growing 'Toro' Carrots
'Toro' carrots are super sweet and perfect for grilling. Seeds should be sown in early spring.  Space seeds about 2 inches apart and cover them with about a quarter inch of soil. If you plant several rows, space the rows about fifteen inches apart. When you get ready to harvest them, make sure that there's moisture in the soil. They come out so much easier. Otherwise, they'll break right at the top as you try to pull them. The other thing to remember is that carrots are a root vegetable. You want to make sure that the soil is deep and loose so the carrots can really penetrate the soil and grow to their fullest potential.

Hands on Gardening
DaylilyHybridizing Daylilies
Daylilies are one of the easiest perennials to hybridize to create your own flower such as the daylilies at the Garden Home Retreat.  A cross between white blooming ‘Joan Senior' and lemon yellow, fragrant ‘Hyperion' is paired with the extremely tall ‘Autumn Minaret'.  The goal is to produce a fragrant, butter yellow, tall daylily.

Pets in the Garden
Danielle Jones, FFA Teacher, describes the horse jumping and livestock competitions at the FFA National Convention and the FFA program at her school.

Kit and AtticusKit and Atticus
One of the purposes of the Garden Home Retreat is to be a home for poultry and livestock that have some sort of heritage or lineage that could be possibly lost. Many of these farm animals are now threatened because people don't need them anymore. That's certainly the case with the Belgian draft horses Kit and Atticus. These are called Belgians and they became popular in this country at the end of the 19th century and the early days of the 20th century. They caught on after the World's Fair of 1903. Throughout the early part of the 20th century, they grew in popularity, but by the end of the Second World War we'd moved from using draft animals to mechanization, so they were replaced by tractors.
