PAS Garden Home: Craving Color

From beautiful flowers and foliage to brightly hued fabrics, we’ll have you craving color in this show.

Construction Update
Masonry at the GHR
We've limited the use of masonry at the Garden Home Retreat to four elements. We have a stone foundation, which is made from local stone, and then we have cut stone above the windows and below the windows for the lintels and sills.  The cottage is red, wood molded brick that has been painted with lime wash.  Finally we used clay pavers for the area under the back porches – the basement patio. And I love the brown color of the pavers because they blend so well with the garden, much better than a red paver would in this particular location. And the pavers have been tumbled, the edges have been broken off just a bit, and this gives them an old look, which fits in with the 19th century farmstead style of the Garden Home Retreat.

Garden Home How To
Sowing Wildflower Seeds
During this episode we learn how to establish a wildflower meadow.  A few points to consider include:
•    Select the right wildflower mix for your region.
•    Prepare the area so there is good seed to soil contact.
•    Select annual, biennial and perennial wildflowers.  Keep in mind that the biennials and perennials will not bloom the first year.
•    Wait to mow the area until after the flowers have gone to seed.

The Green Component
New Lawns
Turf expert Robert Gravis explains how to get your new lawn off to a healthy start.
