Bonny Doon Farm

Bonny Doon Farm in Santa Cruz is one of my favorite spots. I toured the estate several years ago and was swept away by the fields and fields of hazy purple. My eyes weren’t playing tricks on me, Bonny Doon is a lavender farm. Although sun loving lavender is their specialty, owners Gary and Diane Meehan have also created an intriguing shade garden where the design principle of mystery predominates.

Bonny Doon Farm is not open to the public but you can purchase heavenly scented soaps and candles made at the farm on their website www.bonnydoonfarm.com.

Lavendar

by Linn on May 19, 2008 12:49
Another plus for lavendar: deer, rabbits and gophers won't eat it! I also live near Bonny Doon in a woodsy area so have tested various plants for critter munchability. Lavendar is a winner.

We just returned from California and must have driven right past the gardens on our way to Montery. Thanks for the heads up. We'll definitely put it on our must see list next time we visit the relatives in the bay area!

Love how the buildings are almost "invisible" due to the lush and varied plantings.

Imagine how surprised I was to find this article on the Bonny Doon farm-right around the corner from my house, but have never been able to visit-it really isn't open to the public! Thanks for the photos-now I know what it looks like. Lavender grows great here in Bonny Doon altho" some varieties tend to get black in the winter as we get a lot of rain.

Ah-h-h, I can just smell the fragrance in the air. The pictures are beautiful and I would love to visit but it's too bad the public can't tour the site. Thanks for sharing a great place.

It is a tease to report on the wonderful things I won't be able to see because it's not open to the public. There are other gardens around the country that are accessible and wonderful, and you might have brought those to our attention.

I love the pictures of this farm and think it would probably be a dream come true for anyone. I also love lavender and grow it in pots every summer - not only for the fragrance, but because it's so pretty, too. Thank you for letting us see this.

Breathtaking. I would love to recreate the birdbath setting on the west side of my yard. Any advice?

Flora of Santa Cruz / Southeast

by Robert Nimmich on March 29, 2008 07:01
I am amazed at how similar the Flora of Santa Cruz appears to resemble the South East US in everything pictured EXCEPT the Lavender! The Live Oaks with lichens, The Pines, the English Ivy, The Ferns. It's uncanny... I've not had much luck with Lavender in the extremely humid Charleston Weather. I must wonder if there is a cultivar that would work?

Lavender Festival, Sequim, Washington

by Mary Lindsey on March 28, 2008 09:10
So, you think you have seen Lavender farms, huh? Not if you haven't come to the Sequim, Washington Lavender Festival and done a tour of all the Lavender Farms. Do yourself a favor and check it out on the web and then make plans to come in July and see it all for yourself. You are in for a rare and beautiful experience. Squeezes from Sequim, Mary
