In the country town in Oregon where I lived as a child, bachelor buttons and hollyhocks grew wild in the ditches beside the roads. They reseeded themselves at the end of summer and were back the next spring. These are some of my favorite flowers from my childhood memories. There were, also, black-eyed Susans growing on the edges of all the wheat and alfalfa fields.
