In the new season of Garden Home host and garden designer P. Allen Smith discusses his 12 essential principles of design that give viewers the tools to transform their outdoor spaces into places of enchantment and beauty.   He’ll also bring the garden inside the home when he blends nature and interior decor in a new segment, Allen’s Collections.

Episode Descriptions

901 – The 12 Principles
P. Allen Smith gives us an overview of the twelve design principles that will be discussed throughout the season using examples at the Garden Home Retreat. Allen also shares a few tips on properly maintaining your lawn and gets advice from an expert on espalier fruit trees. We will also get a look at what it means to be “green.”

902 – Enclosure
P. Allen Smith explores the design principle of Enclosure in and around the Garden Home Retreat. Allen takes us for a look into a peaceful garden setting at the Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, known as the Healing Garden while a visit to the Whitehall House demonstrates some beautiful examples of enclosure.

903 – Shape and Form
P. Allen Smith introduces us to the design principle of Shape and Form with several examples from the Garden Home Retreat and an exciting trip and tour of Churchill Downs. Allen also visits the Governors Mansion in Arkansas, where bare root roses are being planted. Plus, he talks about clearing land at the Garden Home Retreat for his one-acre vegetable garden.

904 – Framing the View
P. Allen Smith takes a look at the design principle of Framing the View with inviting window treatments and energy efficient windows. We’ll also see how to frame pressed leaves to make botanical artworks and as always, a view of all the beauty of the garden. Plus, we’ll get our first look at the new “Allen’s Collections” segment, featuring a unique table setting with glass bottles, old prints, and of course, a few items from the garden.

905 – Entry
P. Allen Smith explores the design principle of Entry by showing us to the Garden Home Retreat’s grand front door and window boxes full of herbs. Allen demonstrates the use of some of Mother Nature’s unique gifts to decorate his front door, plus a look at spicing up an entry with climbing roses. Allen also visits a plant in Indiana that goes above and beyond the call of duty with recycling.

906 – Focal Point
P. Allen Smith takes a look at the design principle of creating a Focal Point.  Allen takes us on a tour of some of the Garden Home Retreat’s special points of interest and also shows us a way to have a grand centerpiece for your next party and still hold a conversation with the person across the table. We’ll visit an amazing garden that uses it’s space for the arts, along with a visit to the poultry show at the state fair.

907 - Structure
P. Allen Smith examines the design principle Structure, sharing how he uses it in his garden. Allen shows us the different constructed features at the Garden Home Retreat; along with visits to the greenhouse at Churchill Downs; a raised vegetable bed in Union Springs, Alabama and a butterfly conservatory in New Jersey.  If you don’t really have room for a garden or the time to invest in one, Allen shows you how to plant a mini garden by way of a terrarium.

908 – Color
P. Allen Smith looks at the vibrant design principle of Color.  From simple bouquet arrangements to the color of paint, and through the glorious color of peacocks, Allen shows us the impact of clever uses of color. Plus, he reveals unique tropicals in the greenhouse, shows how to invite Mother Nature in for dinner, and explores even more of the colors around the Garden Home Retreat.

909 – Texture, Pattern and Rhythm

P. Allen Smith demonstrates texture, pattern and rhythm throughout his garden. Allen  also shows us the process of replacing a 'Sugar Tyme' crabapple tree and gives us tips on taking care of espalier fruit trees. Later we meet a man who has an interesting way of recycling wood.

910 – Abundance
P. Allen Smith explores the design principle of Abundance.  Allen shares the bounty of the garden, talks daffodils and larkspur, shrubs that rebloom and even water reclamation. To top it off, he has an abundance of lambs to show you!

911- Whimsy
P. Allen Smith demonstrates the design principle of Whimsy and asks, “What’s a garden without a few whimsical touches?”  Allen introduces us to some comical additions to the Garden Home Retreat, Khaki Campbell ducklings and his unique “Chicken Temple” that’s under construction.  Also, a few tips on keeping insects off of the herbs in the one-acre vegetable garden, and a visitor from South Africa who talks with Allen about experimenting with new plant introductions.

912 -  Mystery
For P. Allen Smith, the design principle of Mystery invokes curiosity and expectation in the garden.  Allen shows us a few examples of mystery, plus some helpful information on citronella geraniums, grafting Japanese maples and an easy way to plant potatoes. Finally, we look in on Allen’s first day with his new baby chicks.

913 - Time
P. Allen Smith ponders the design principle of Time. Allen looks at how various garden styles reflect certain ages of design, as he focuses on how Time impacts the design of his own garden. Allen also shares tips for growing asparagus, container gardening and even how chickens can help children learn. Plus, in the “Allen’s Collections” segment, he talks about his fascination with glass bottles and what he uses them for.

On an episode I watched the weekend of April 3-4, I saw a composter demonstrated. It was a tumbler-type outdoor composter that had 4 chambers. Could you tell me any information regarding this composter (manufacturer, where it can be purchased, etc). Thank you.

Planting Roses
