Buddleia davidii

by Greekgal on July 24, 2011 07:02
I\'ve grown Buddleia davidii many times here in Arkansas. I\'ve never had a volunteer come up. In fact, they grow beautifully for a couple of years, and then die. I guess if I want them bad enough, I will have to grow them as an annual.

knock out roses

I planted about 25 knockout roses last spring. They bloomed well last year. They don't look as healthy or full as other knock out roses that I have seen. Can you tell me how to take care of them? I live in east central Alabama. I did cut them back a little in February. I would appreciate any information you can give me on how to take care of them. Thank you.

Hi Mr. Smith, Here in Washington State we have removed the Butterfly Bush from our Arboretum. It is considered invasive. One wonders if that is not the case in other parts of the country. Boxwoods

by Nancy Starczyk on February 4, 2010 05:26
When I went to France, I saw boxwoods in containers everywhere...When I came home to Southern California, I bought "japanese boxwoods" and planted them in large clay pots...with 3" of pebbles at the bottom for drainage. After a couple years, I noticed that the leaves are yellowing. Are they pot bound? Is the drainage wrong? They are planted level with the soil. Should I start over? I was thinking that they may not do well after a few years in a pot...it is now 4 years. Thanks for any advice.

Yellowing leaves on Nasturtiums

by Carole Bartlett on June 14, 2009 10:50
I plant up a pot of Nasturtiums every spring. They do well for awhile but then they have a problem with yellowing leaves. I have tried to fertilize them but that does not help. What is the problem and how can I solve it? Thank You.

Knockout Roses

by Vivian N. Sutphin on June 13, 2009 08:22
I purchased 4 (1 red single, 1 red double, 2 pink) last early summer and they bloomed pretty well last year but---they really are knockouts this year!! They certainly live up to their name. I'm having a problem with "something" (don't see anything) this year that is chewing the leaves along the veins--Any idea what it could be and what might I try to cure it? Love your website and your TV shows when I catch them.

Knock Out roses

Hi, I so very much enjoy your emails. Thank you. My two little but beautiful rose plants, against your dozens makes it foolish for me to comment on my garden. I live in a beautifully landscape condo in Ct. I have a small garden in front and gardens going down the side of the house an across the back. I also have a screened porch in the back of the house, that gets the western sun. I use tall planters in front and some hanging baskets on the porch. But the roses are new last year. I added blue Salvia beside my roses and right now it looks great. I plant white and pink im- patients around the edge of the gardens. It keeps me busy and I love the gardens.

strawberries

by Pam on May 30, 2009 05:27
I have some strawberries called Whoppers and if I understand right they are junebearing plants. After they have finished producing strawberries, can they be cut back and will they put out again and produce more strawberries. What is the care for strawberries once they have finished yielding their fruit. Sincerely, Pam

The Knockout Roses

by Leta Myles Franklin on May 28, 2009 01:41
I have 9 Knockout Roses in my garden. All mature, full size. I notice Rogers Street Dept. has begun to grow Knockout Roses along a Blvd. in Rogers. These are kept very short. I am wondering if this will sit well with the roses or will they give up.

roses and peonies

by Annette on May 27, 2009 10:19
No spot in my yard receives 6 hours of sun per day. However, miniature roses and geraniums do quite well in my north garden. Will other roses do well in this same area? Will peonies?

coleuses

by Annette on May 27, 2009 10:16
Somthing, probably slugs, is making "lace" out of my coleuses. How can I eliminate the problem without endangering cats and dogs?

knock out rose

by Beth Dodd on May 26, 2009 12:09
I planted my knock out roses, and they are growing (new reddish leaves), but they have stopped blooming. It has been 3-4 weeks now. Do I need to fertilize them or is it because of all the rain? Thank you for your help with this. Beth

Knockout Roses

by Carol on May 26, 2009 11:32
I purchased 5 Knockout Roses this spring and they are beautiful. But, the leaves all have little holes in them. What can I do? I couldn't see that they had any bugs, and otherwise they look healthy. My first time at rose, hope you can help. Thanks.

Knock-Out companions

by Sandy on May 26, 2009 09:33
I grow all the Knock-Out roses-every color except red. My favorite companions are Salvia "Black and Blue', Verbena Bonariensis, Salvia Leucanthae, and rambling Clematis in purple tones, especially those with "bells". Spanish lavender recently was beautiful with 'Blushing'. Thank you for your pictures.

Nice Roses try Ocean Solutions

by John DAcquisto, Ph.D on May 24, 2009 12:00
Your roses are very nice. If you use Ocean Solutions by Sorganics your roses will be aphid proof and more robust in color. It has transformed my roses. Truly amazing fertilizer for the garden.

Thanks for the inspiring view of your plants. As a new greenhouse (personal) owner, I am delighted to see that plants will actually grow and look like the seed packages. It is even better to se perennials showing their heads in the garden, which her (Albert, Canada) is much later than than where you are. Your pictures help with my impatience when dealing with my own garden. I just can't wait for the little seeds to sprout and leaves and petals to actually show up. Boy, I wish I lived in the south! I learned to take care of a garden at my grandmother's home. My parents were less enthusiastic due to Alberta's colder and dryer climate. I have amassed a small library to keep me occupied and not fussing over plants that need their space and time. It is do hard to wait, but the reality of Summer here will make my patience in the long run worth the wait. Carole

I have been a big fan of Knockout Roses for years. I use them in all the gardens I design for people - I plant lavender, nepeta, annual blue salvia, verbena bonariensis and goldmound spirea next to them... Jan Johnsen johnsenlandscapes.com

My nursery man advised me to plant a yellow Knock-Out Rose next to a pink. After seeing your long row of just pinks, I'm almost sorry that I took his advice. Now, I'm eager to see my yellow and pink blooming together and hope they'll look as good as all one color, as yours are.

Knockout Roses

I truly enjoyed the selection of companion plants you presented for the Knockout Roses. After Katrina we had to start all over with our landscape and the Pink Knockouts we planted are the focus of our border! They have performed excellent in our hot humid climate. We have since added red Knockouts and rainbow Knockout Roses to our landscape. Thanks for the ideas!

Ornamental Grass

by L. Knight on May 23, 2009 09:28
Will Ruby grass grow easily in Southern CA? I just love the pink grass, want to mix this with my purple fountain and green grass(w/tan whisps) at the fence to hide the roof lines below me in the back yard (I have a great view)--the whisps remind me of NC at the beach!! Thanks!!

Knockout roses

We have a two level retaining wall flower bed in the front of our small house. Last year we planted Knockout roses along with red wave petunias and Snow in Summer. This spring we moved some of the roses up to the top level because they were crowded last summer and got powdery mildew from my watering the other plants. This year the Snow in Summer is starting to drop over the wall and looks so pretty. We decided to just plant a few white wave petunias this year.Hopefully there won't be the mildew problem. When everything gets to it's full color, I will try to send you a picture. I really appreciate your e-newsletter. Alice Dixon, Ohio

I am a hugh fan of knock out roses. I have several . Pinks, double reds, reds, which I love, however this year I have lost three of my best bushes. I think my vole problems may be causing this, as they look good, then wilt and die. Any suggestions as to handle this problem will be greatly appreciated.

I bought 5 bushes for Mother's Day for myself ! I will plant them under a large round top window on a rock house. What would you suggest for space between each bush and companion plants in Nashville, TN?? I was in the audience at the Cheekwood Antique and Garden Show several years ago ~ you told me the initial "P" stood for Persnikity! Donna

Companion plants for Knockout roses

Thank you for the great suggestions. I was trying to decide what to plant along side Knockout roses I will be planting in a sunny spot. I'm removing some huge Verburnum along my side walk and needed some ideas. Any suggestions for something that would stay green to plant there too?

tall Knock Out Roses

by Rebecca on May 23, 2009 09:17
I'm looking and waiting for a climbing rose that grows like the ones in the last photo in your series of Knock Out roses but on their site they list all the current varieties as only growing to 4 or 5 feet tall. The roses in the photos look 9 or 10 feet tall. How did you do that??

Would you put something in between the Knock outs and the petunias? Where would you put the coleus and the butterfly bushes? I would love to see the beds from a from view. I love you newsletter and books. Thanks, Janette Davis

KnockOutRoses

by Margot Smith on May 22, 2009 06:56
I became familiar with these roses last Summer. I bought two of them and planted them around the front of my home. They promtly flourished and grew twice their size. So, this year I bought several of them and they are in full bloom right now making the front and side of my home beautiful, along the other roses that I already have. I like the knockout roses because they don't get the fungus the other roses in my garden seem to get during our rainy days. I just finished spraying them. The knockout are much easier to raise. Thanks for letting me know about them. Margot
