Tomato Harvest

Earlier this summer I planted a variety of tomatoes both at the Garden Home Retreat and in the small vegetable garden at my house.  Now the work is paying off with an abundance of juicy tomatoes.  I planted slicing, paste and cherry tomatoes so that I’d have a one to suit every meal.

To make the most of the limited space at home I planted patio and determinate tomatoes, but out at the Garden Home Retreat I was able to grow some of the larger, indeterminate varieties.

Good to Know

Determinate tomatoes plants max out at a specified size. They tend to be compact growers, but only produce one crop of tomatoes.

Indeterminate tomato plants will sprawl, but produce continuous waves of tomatoes throughout the growing season.

Tomatoes

I enjoyed your tomatoes segment. I agree with all of your solections. I have tried most of them. There is one you missed. It is called the Goliath. It is large meaty tomatoe. I feel it is better then the Big Beaf F1. It will grow to 2 lbs or more. We have had them to 4 inches in diameter. One slice is a tomatoe sandwich. The flavor is extremely good. It is prolific and it is very resistant to blossom end rot and cracking. We grow it every year. We start to pick the middle to end of July and it lasts well into October. We live in North Indiana. It is a very good canning tomato and I have made Tomato sauce with it also. Carolyn

Your beautiful tomatoes

by Suzanne on September 25, 2009 09:36
I just love! looking at all these tomatoes as they have been a favorite of mine and my sister since we were toddlers. I would love to see and hear about all 34 varieties but that's not practical, I know. Since moving to an apartment with no, and I mean no, window box, balcony, or any planting space whatsoever, I enjoy read and looking at your site so much. Thank you.

Green Zebras

We raise green zebras also and they are a good conversation piece at our farmer's market. I also put various colors of tomatoes on a glass plate (in one level) garnish them with basil leaves and serve with a vinagrette dressing. Besides being very attractive, it is also very tasty.

This will give me some ideas for next summer!! I am now enjoying fresh tomatoes but none of these. I have Rutgers, Stripey, Pineapple, and grape tomatoes. Only the Rutgers and grape tomatoes are ripe though. I would like to try some of the special cherry tomatoes you named.

I am growing tomatoes. I bought at the Home Depot, small containers of tomatoes. They will be huge in size and I hope in Taste. My wife takes care of the the fertilizes and we already have sizable tomatoes plants. I think by next week, we will harvest them. My question is: After harvesting, do I leave the tomatoes trees in place for new tomatoes, or I take them off for next season? Thank you

wilt desease?

by Dolnnis Culp on August 23, 2008 08:51
For 2 years we have had our tomato plants just wilt and die and still produce a few small irregular tomatoes. No tomatoes to speak of in quantity or quality. A man told me they had wilt desease. What can I do to get rid of it and have nice tomato plants next year?

question regarding tomatoes

by Shelly on August 23, 2008 03:17
We have a tomato plant that should yield a striped tomato (we lost the tag), but the few tomatoes on the plant are green, and not turning red. We also have a plum tomato plant that has produced a lot of nice tomatoes, but now the plant is suddenly wilting. Do you know why this would happen?

I enjoyed your tips on growing tomatoes. However I recently moved down to south Florida from the hudson valley in NY. I am not sure when to grow tomatoes down here. But I am living in a townhouse and would like to try some potted tomatoes. Is this the right time?? I do not think the growing times are the same as it is much too hot here in the summer.
