We're so fortunate in the Chicago area, even in the suburbs, having a vibrant local food community. At our house, our meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy come from pasturing natural, local, GMO-free farms, and our veggies mostly come from farm stands, farmers' markets and our garden. Grocery store stuff simply can't compare in quality or flavor, or in the love and care we know goes into it. It's a wonderful thing, knowing your farmers.

This is a rough year for many farmers because of the heat and drought affecting so much of the country. Give 'em some love, y'all!

I love Heifer International. It is one of my favorite charities. I have never visited the ranch, but I think we need more groups doing just what Heifer has undertaken as far as education. They have a variety of projects going on all over the world and many of them right here in America. One year we got a group of kids together who then donated their funds to purchase some ducks for families in China. It was an important lesson. My son always requests his animals be donated in Russia. I am not as familiar with the CSA program and it was nice to read something about it here.

Please be sure to mention where your CSA is located, or what city it serves. I'm looking for you too.

Thank you Allen for such a wonderful article on CSA! Here on our farm we are trying to bridge the gap between the "eater" and the "grower" by offering a CSA program to our supporters. Each year our CSA program grows a bit more in size, as those such as yourself bring CSA to the forefront by explaining it to everyone. It's such an easy way to experience the benefits of eating healthy nearly year round! There are many other benefits too of belonging to a CSA, benefits that you never get when you check out at the supermarket! Most of all, the food is so fresh that you can actually taste the flavor! We encourage everyone to give a CSA program a try! Judy McGary, Doe Run Farm CSA
