Our local health department offered cooking classes for our WIC (Women, Infant and Children) clients. The WIC coordinator put together recipes gathered from staff, board members and others that incorporated the food stamp list and the local food bank offerings. Not only were these women taught how to cook more nutritious meals, it encouraged them make better food choices. We also offered a class for young women (5th and 6th graders)called Girls on the Run, where health and nutrition was taught along with making healthy lifestyle choices. There are many opportunties to help educate and share ideas in every community. Appoaching service boards and clubs to share your ideas is just the first step in making things happen. Sometimes these folks just need some people to step up and volunteer to implement these type of programs.

So many do not know how to prepare simple food from scratch. Overly processed food is typically purchased by those on assistance. How can we reach these people and show them that eating healthy is not only better for them but will stretch their food dollars?
