A Gift Horse
I know it’s a cliché, but it’s true – life is full of surprises. I certainly wasn’t expecting the surprisingly big gift that my sister Susan gave me this year for my birthday. And when I say big, I mean it, literally.
When we were growing up, Susan was always collecting stray critters, so one of my nicknames for her was Ellie Mae! Even today she has chickens, ducks, dogs, goats and a llama. Sometimes my sister’s passion for saving animals has a way of spilling over to me.
I knew it wouldn’t be long after she learned about the plans for the Garden Home Retreat that I would start receiving a variety of creatures in need of a home. What I hadn’t guessed was that they would be so large.
This past spring Susan gave me two Belgian Draft Horses. That’s right, horses, and two of them to boot! A mother and son, Kit and Atticus are their names. These horses are smaller than a Clydesdale, but they are still massive.
At first I was flabbergasted. Caring for a horse is a lot of work! But my heart was won over as soon as I met them.
As was the case when Marge, the cat, came along, I just didn’t know how much I would enjoy these additions to my life until they came along.
It wasn’t the first time and I’m sure it won’t be the last that I’ve said this to my sister, thank you for giving me something I didn’t even know I needed.
