Citrus reticulate 'Calamondin'
The Calamondin orange is a small evergreen tree with sweet smelling flowers and miniature orange fruit. In its native tropical environment it can grow from 6 to 25 feet tall. Most often it is grown in a container that can be brought indoors during winter. The flowers appear in late winter or early spring and are followed by fruit, which can take as long as a year to ripen. The little oranges are edible, but sour. Many people use them for marmalade or to flavor drinks.
This plant is actually very easy to care for. It prefers full sun so in the house place it in front a window with a southern exposure for optimal light. Once established the plant is moderately drought tolerant. Water when the top 3-inches of soil is dry, but don't allow the roots to dry out completely and avoid overwatering. Feed with an all purpose liquid fertilizer in spring when new growth begins.
There is nothing like a Calamondin orange tree to brighten your home. There is always something interesting about this plant - bright orange fruits, fragrant flowers and glossy green foliage. Often you will find these plants grown as a single trunk, but I like mine to have multiple trunks and a broad canopy. The way to do this is to purchase a plant with multiple trunks. Next choose the strongest 2 to 3 trunks and remove all of the smaller trunks. Finally remove about a third of the foliage from the bottom part of the plant.
