Arkansas Cultural Enrichment Award
Sometimes life presents you with nice surprises. Here's one that I recently enjoyed. The Hot Springs Documentary and Film Institute asked me to be the subject of a documentary to share my views about issues near and dear to my heart such as land stewardship, local food production, and teaching lessons from the garden. The film is entitled "Out on a Limb" and it will premiere October 16-25, 2009 at the 18th Annual Documentary Film Festival. The Festival is a national event where thousands gather to view cutting edge documentaries from more than 90 countries. Ben Meade, the Chairman of the Board of the Institute is directing the film. As I worked with Ben on the film and learned more about the work of the Documentary and Film Institute I discovered that along with the Festival they also hold symposia, forums, and discussion groups throughout Arkansas using documentary films to promote critical thinking about real life issues. These programs help to bring cultural and social knowledge to all ages from an array of gifted film professionals who have a passion for the art form. To provide funding for these activities, they hold an annual dinner where they present an honoree with the Arkansas Cultural Enrichment Award. I was surprised to be selected as this year's recipient and delighted that so many friends and family came out for the party. Here are a few snapshots from the event.
