Borax Crystal Ornaments

I recently discovered a way to put Borax to good use - crystal pipe cleaner ornaments. These holiday decorations are a snap to make and will last quite a long time. Borax Ornament

What You'll Need:

  • White Pipe Cleaners
  • String
  • Twig/Pencil
  • Borax (I used 20 Mule Team Laundry Booster. Do not use Boraxo Soap.)
  • Water
  • Blue Food Coloring (optional)
  • Jars Large Enough to Submerge Ornament in Borax Solution

Steps:
1. Fashion your ornaments out of white pipe cleaners or any other color of your choosing. I made spirals but you can make a wide range of shapes. Just use your imagination.

2. Tie one end of your string to the top of your ornament and the other end to your twig or pencil. Or, if your shape allows, bend the tip of the pipe cleaner over your twig to hold the ornament in place.

3. Mix together your crystal solution at a ratio of 3 tablespoons of Borax to one cup of boiling water. Stir until the Borax dissolves. Don't expect all of the powder to dissolve, some may settle on the bottom. To give your crystal a slightly blue cast, add a drop or two of blue food coloring.

Pipe Cleaner Soaking in Borax4. Pour the crystal solution into a wide mouth jar. You will need enough of this solution to submerge your pipe cleaner ornament. You can divide it among several jars if you want to make more than one ornament.

5. Submerge your ornament in the crystal solution with the twig resting on the lip of the jar so that the ornament hangs freely. You do not want the ornament to touch the bottom of the jar

Borax Cyrstal6. Leave the ornament in place for overnight.

In the morning you should have a beautiful holiday ornament covered in crystals!

While Borax is an earth friendly cleaner, it is not edible. So keep your ornaments away from small children and pets.

We just finished this project with an after-school program. The kids loved it. If you want to add more color, forget the food coloring and use colored pipe cleaners. The results are beautiful.

I was wondering what other things can the crystals can attach to? Do they only attach to the fibers on pipe cleaners? Can they also attach to wire? thanks

I made these with my second grade students before Christmas and they were fast, easy and fun. We used metal food cans students brought from home and different colors of chenile sticks. Some crystals grew large and others grew tiny. The students loved seeing the crystals form and had not only an ornament for their home, but a good Science lesson as well. Thank you!

I forwarded the Borax recipe to my daughter and granddaughter and they made a BUNCH of the ornaments! It was fascinating how different the batches came out - some with fine little crystals, some with big cubes. The colors also were different. They made alllll kinds of shapes, and GD gave many of them as gifts. Thanks for another great project!! (Even if it was hard to get off the counter)

What a neat Idea. Thanks. I think the lady looking for the frosting is looking for melted candle wax. I had my girl scouts make candles this way one year. Use a taper candle as the base. Melt parafin wax and add crayons for color or leave white. When wax has melted beat with egg beater and form fluff around candle base or use 3 " pilar candle and place a small picture on the candle and surround with the beaten parafin. Really neat.

Melissa--The 'frosting' that hardened and looked like snow was made with Ivory Flakes and water. Not even sure they are still available. I frosted candles and even made a large Santa candle and used the frosting for beard, etc. It lasted for years and years if stored away from heat. cheers.

I made these ornaments, left them in the solution 24 hours, they are beautiful. I did both short ones (pint size jars) & long ones (quart size jars). It's a project I will also do with my grandsons. Thanks for this wonderful idea! Pam

Borax crystal snowflakes

by Amber on December 18, 2008 10:02
After reading this artical my children and I made snowflake ornaments using this idea. Both my 4 year old and my 10 year old really enjoyed mixing the borax into the water. They were amazed when we took the pipe cleaners out of the water a few hours later to find them completely coverd in small crystals. When we gave them out as gifts at a Christmas party, many people were suprized to hear that my kids made them. This is a really simple and inexpensive way to make great looking ornaments. Thank you for this awsome idea!

Forsting mix for snow ?

by melissa on December 13, 2008 11:19
When I was young we used to make some sort of frosting mix and used it to coat projects to look like snow. I am not sure what it was made out of, maybe some kind of soap mmisture. It was very fluffy and kept it's shape when it hardened. We added spaarkles and such. I would love to know what it was if anyone remembers something like that. please email me. I love the borax trick and can't wait to try it

Snowflake Crystals

We made these for a science experiment. Just cut the pipecleaners into lengths that will fit sideways into a large tall mason jar. Twist three together to make six spokes for each snowflake. We found the food coloring didn't work very well, maybe we didn't use enough. Have Fun!

My daughter and granddaughter and I tried this last night but to no avail. It didn't do anything. I used exactly the same ingredients as listed above. Is there something missing from the recipe? This only has borax and water. Thank you.

by Ginger on December 8, 2008 02:52
If I can get the email of the person that asked about the ingredients for the "rock garden" (where you use bluing and charcoal), I think I have the recipe at home. I made this as a science project and got a blue ribbon.

What a great idea. I am going to try it this week. Does anyone know how to grow colored moss on coal? I did it when I was in girl scouts. I remember we used iodine and bluing on chunks of coal, but cannot the other ingredients.

While I've already decorated for my Chriastmas Bash, these ornaments sound great...and so-o-o-o easy. I'm going to pass the "recipe" along to friends. And I'm going to copy it to make some next year. Keep the ideas coming!

question on the Borax Crystal ornaments

by Linda on December 6, 2008 09:14
Can you reuse the solution to do multiple ornaments? Do you suggest suspending the ornaments to dry? Have you tried other items to "grow" crystals on besides pipe cleaners? Thanks for the great idea. i hope to try it soon. I

printing an article

I loved the crystal ornament article but when I printed it out it was too small for me to read clearly. There was no way for me to make a font adjustment on my computer for this. Did I miss something when I tried to print it ...?
