Excerpt from P. Allen Smith's Living in the Garden Home

"Gardening gives me so much: The anticipation of a new season, the promise of all it holds, the mystery of not knowing, the surprise when things change, the challenge of overcoming obstacles, the chance to learn something new, the amazement in seeing things grow, the satisfaction when combinations come together, the heartbreak when they fall apart, all these elements play a part in replenishing the deep well of pleasure that I gain in the process.

How about you? What draws you outside to plant, battle weeds, brave the weather, and then fall into a chair at the end of the day with a contended sigh? Whether you are sure of your answer or are still trying to figure it out, this book is grist for the mill. I offer it to all those who feel the desire to plant a seed and then have the patience to wait and see what happens....Spending time in the garden is the way I stay connected to nature and renew my ongoing partnership with her. I grow plants for food and for pleasure. One nourishes my body, the other my soul. I need both to feel complete...My hope is that by sharing my seasonal journey, you, too, will discover some new reasons why you must garden, and along the way create many seasons filled with your own garden pleasures."

Please explain about a frost proof container. Your article about planting tulips said to use a frost proof container. Once the tulips are planted in the container how often should they be watered through the winter? I presume you are keeping these outside throughout the entire winter. I would really enjoy having tulips blooming next spring. Please provide more detailed information about this project. I live in Keller, TX (near Fort Worth) and am wondering if there are any special rules that apply to this planting zone.

Magnolia Seeds

Loyce - You can plant these seeds when they are fresh or store them cold until spring and plant them then. In both cases you should not allow the seed to dry out. To remove the fleshy covering you can soak them in water and then squeeze out the seed. Plant immediately or store in moist vermiculite in the refrigerator until spring and then sow. Keep in mind that a seed can take months to germinate and a seedling grown magnolia can take years (like 10 or 15) before blooming. Regards, P. Allen Smith

I picked up some Magnolia Tree seeds today. I was wondering can you plant these seeds? If so do I dry them lst or plant them as I picked them up. I also have dried the big purple plum seeds from summer and have a few apple seeds dried to put in dirt. Will they produce?
