March Seasonal Foods
The days are getting longer and the weather's getting warmer and that can only mean one thing- spring is on its way! But it's not here yet, so the ground is still chilly and production of seasonal fruits and vegetables hasn't received that spring boost quite yet. Of course, you can always make a menu out of seasonal foods, and some of my favorites are coming up this month.
Why Eat Seasonally?
Growing my own produce is a great joy to me. I can source almost everything I cook from my one-acre garden, and do it at a comparatively low price. Of course that means I'm dependent on the seasons, but it always ensures that I have a rotation of food to enjoy. Whether or not you have a garden, eating seasonally keeps things exciting- it isn't the same old recipe day after day if you can use ingredients that are only available for a couple of months. So I encourage you to eat up!
What's in Season?
March is a great time for what seems like rare produce- you can make quite the feast from this array!
Artichokes, asparagus, chicory, chives, grapefruit, greens, horseradish, leeks, lettuce, oranges, parsnips, peas, rhubarb, and shallots.
Asparagus Appetizer Recipe
Now that the weather's getting nice, I like to make finger-foods that I can take outside on the porch and enjoy. One of my favorites is asparagus with a horseradish dip, both of which are in season this month.
