The Antique Rose Emporium

God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December.
J.M. Barrie (1860-1937)

I guess what they say is true; everything is bigger in Texas, including the roses! At least that is the case at the Antique Rose Emporium in Brenham. One year I was a guest speaker at their annual Festival of Roses and was overwhelmed by both the warm welcome I received and the size of the roses, not to mention the barbeque!

It was an especially fun trip for me because I've known the owners Mike and Jean Shoup for many years. It was great to see how much their retail nursery business has grown. Rose Star of the RepublicIn fact, Mike has even started developing his own line of roses that combine the look of old-fashioned varieties bred in Europe with a tough, "Texas-style" nature. I am particularly smitten with one variety called 'Star of the Republic'. The salmon blooms are huge with a lovely fragrance.

Now although I highly recommend a trip to the nursery, you don't have to go to Texas to order roses from The Antique Rose Emporium. They have both a mail order catalog and online store. Visit to browse through their selection of both modern and old-fashioned roses.

Roses aren't the only things I found growing in Texas. I spoke with The Heritage Rose Foundation president Stephen Scanniello and he had some exciting news. The organization has expanded their newsletter into a 30 to 40 page journal called Rosa-Mundi. Published 3 times a year, the journal is a great gift for yourself or your favorite rose aficionado.
