Barbara Mitchell’ daylily will win your heart with its large pale pink flowers with deep pink veins and a lemon-lime throat. This award winning variety blooms early to mid-season. It is remarkable for its full form, heavily ruffled, crimped petals and extended bloom time. I grow ‘Barbara Mitchell’ daylily in my front garden under the canopy of a large elm tree. In spite of the dappled shade, this daylily is a champion that never falls short.

While daylilies aren’t particular about soil conditions, I like to add compost into my clay soil to loosen it up and improve drainage. The crown of the plant (where the leaves and roots meet) should be no more than a half inch below the surface. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system. For a neat appearance, remove old stalks and divide clumps every 2 to 3 years.
