Create a Cool Season Herb Container
You know, I'm always looking for ways to squeeze the last few drops of sunshine out of the season. That even comes down to planting some herbs. Maybe September or late summer is still not a bad time to get a few things planted for that cool autumn season. And herbs are the perfect thing.
Now, what I'm doing is I'm just taking a small, manageable container, something I can move inside, as we draw closer to the frost date. And this container is something that's decorative but will look really good inside. And I'm just filling it up with a soil mix that's perfect for vegetables and herbs. I'm getting this thing filled up just about to the top, about an inch below the rim of the container. You can see that looks really good. And then I'm just gonna plant three different very aromatic herbs that I love to cook with, the first one is just some sweet basil. I love these biodegradable containers, you just take the plastic wrap off and I peel back just a little bit of that peat pot, like this, and tear into it. And this young basil plant will just jump right out of the container. It's gonna be beautiful.
And then this is a rosemary, I'm gonna do the same thing with it, put it up here to the front of the container, like that. And then something to cascade over the edge is this oregano. I wish you could get a sense of the aroma of these herbs, just moving them around like this. It just filled this whole end of the loggia — I'm just gonna tear this one off — with that marvelous, herbal scent. And there we go, right on the front.
Now, believe it or not, just a few weeks, these will all fill in, and I'll continue to cut the oregano and pinch back leaves of this basil and use them in the kitchen. And all I need to do is fertilize them a few times. Each time I water, I'll use a dilute solution in my mix, and then, when that first frost date comes along, I'll move them inside.
